The 1994 Discovery: Predating Stonehenge by 6,000 Years
In 1994, German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) visited a rounded limestone ridge in southeastern Anatolia, Turkey, called Göbekli Tepe ("Potbelly Hill") [1,2]. The Megalithic Architecture: 20-Ton T-Pillars and Zoomorphic Art
Excavations have uncovered over 20 circular and oval enclosures ranging from 10 to 30 meters in diameter, with only a fraction currently excavated [1,2,4]. At the center of each circle stand two monolithic T-shaped limestone pillars up to 5.5 meters tall and weighing up to 20 tons, surrounded by smaller perimeter pillars embedded in dry-stone walls [1,2].
The T-pillars are anthropomorphic representations: sculpted arms, hands, loincloth belts, and fox-skin garments are carved along the stone shafts, while the horizontal crossbeams represent abstract human heads [1,4]. The pillars are adorned with high-relief carvings of predatory beasts: snarling leopards, boars, venomous snakes, scorpions, vultures holding spherical objects, and wild bulls [1,4,5].

Rewriting Prehistory: Did Religion Create Agriculture?
For over a century, orthodox archaeological dogma asserted that agriculture led to settled surplus, which enabled urban societies, monument building, and organized religion [1,3]. Göbekli Tepe inverted this paradigm completely [1,2,3]: excavations revealed zero domestic houses, hearths, cultivated domesticated seeds, or permanent water cisterns, but tens of thousands of butchered wild gazelle, aurochs, and red deer bones [1,3,6].
Göbekli Tepe was a regional ceremonial gathering sanctuary built by mobile hunter-gatherers [1,3]. To quarry, transport, and carve hundreds of 20-ton limestone megaliths, hundreds of nomadic bands had to congregate cooperatively. To feed these monumental labor forces, humans began selectively gathering and managing wild Einkorn wheat (which geneticists traced to Mount Karacadag, just 30 kilometers from Göbekli Tepe) [1,3,6]. In Klaus Schmidt’s famous formulation: "First came the temple, then came the city" [1,2].
Around 8000 BC, for reasons still debated by archaeologists, the entire complex was deliberately and systematically backfilled with hundreds of cubic meters of limestone debris, animal bone refuse, and soil, creating an artificial sealed time capsule that preserved the megaliths intact for 10,000 years [1,2,7].
