The 1994 Discovery: Predating Stonehenge by 6,000 Years

In 1994, German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) visited a rounded limestone ridge in southeastern Anatolia, Turkey, called Göbekli Tepe ("Potbelly Hill") [1,2]. The Megalithic Architecture: 20-Ton T-Pillars and Zoomorphic Art

Excavations have uncovered over 20 circular and oval enclosures ranging from 10 to 30 meters in diameter, with only a fraction currently excavated [1,2,4]. Rewriting Prehistory: Did Religion Create Agriculture?

For over a century, orthodox archaeological dogma asserted that agriculture led to settled surplus, which enabled urban societies, monument building, and organized religion [1,3]. Göbekli Tepe inverted this paradigm completely [1,2,3]: excavations revealed zero domestic houses, hearths, cultivated domesticated seeds, or permanent water cisterns, but tens of thousands of butchered wild gazelle, aurochs, and red deer bones [1,3,6].

Göbekli Tepe was a regional ceremonial gathering sanctuary built by mobile hunter-gatherers [1,3]. To quarry, transport, and carve hundreds of 20-ton limestone megaliths, hundreds of nomadic bands had to congregate cooperatively. To feed these monumental labor forces, humans began selectively gathering and managing wild Einkorn wheat (which geneticists traced to Mount Karacadag, just 30 kilometers from Göbekli Tepe) [1,3,6].
